This date allows a company to reconcile who is entitled to be paid the declared dividend. Existing shareholders are entitled to receive the declared dividend even if they sell their shares on or after the ex-dividend date. Investors who become shareholders the day of or after the ex-dividend date are not entitled to receive the declared dividend.
